The tea stall under the railway arch on Brixton Road had been shut since the Tuesday, but Mrs Okonedo kept a kettle warm for anyone who came knocking. Ruth came at seven with her bag of wet cardigans and found the shutter already rolled up, a grin painted on the tin where the price list should have been. Someone had left a chipped cup on the counter, a dark brown tea still steaming in it, and beside it a top hat turned upside down, full of rain.

"You're late," said a voice from the stacked crates. It was the cat from the poster that had been pasted to every lamppost since the market's centenary, grey and striped, its smile arriving a half-second before the rest of it. "Everyone else is already mad, and you're still wearing a sensible coat."

Ruth set down her bag. Outside, the rain drummed on the arch and the trains rattled overhead, and the cat's tail curled through the puddles like a question. "I have a stall to open."

"Open it, then. Nobody will buy anything. They'll only come to ask whether the tea is real." The grin widened. "It is, you know. Drink it. Then tell me which of the stall-holders has been pretending to be sane all these years."

She drank. The tea tasted of wet paper and marmalade, and by the time the first customer shuffled in, wiping his glasses, Ruth had already started to laugh.
