Cheshire Cat grin with We're all mad here

Realism · Mixed · Photo

A close-up of a grinning Cheshire Cat face with teal eyes, a pink nose, grey shaded fur and rows of white teeth. The fur and muzzle use soft greyscale shading and fine strokes, while the eyes carry the strongest colour. The phrase We're all mad here is set in a blackletter style lettering beneath the grin, on a pale background of skin.

The name badges had been printed with the wrong surnames, so Hannah spent the first hour of the reunion reading people's lapels instead of their faces. Mr Pargeter arrived late, which was how he had always arrived. He still rubbed his thumb along his jaw before saying anything he thought was clever. "Well," he said, to nobody in particular, "we're all mad here." A few people groaned. Hannah remembered the line from Year Ten biology, chalked beneath a grinning cat that Jo Lister had painted across the lab door in a single afternoon, teeth and all, while the rest of them were supposed to be dissecting frogs.

Jo was by the coat rail, holding a glass she wasn't drinking. Hannah crossed the room, past a man selling hot tubs and two women arguing about a holiday in Crete, and stood beside her. "Is the door still there?" Jo asked. "Pargeter wouldn't let the caretaker paint over it. He said it was the only honest thing in the building."

Hannah tried to picture it: the wide teal eyes watching the corridor, the grin fixed at the height of a fourteen-year-old's head. "I walked past it on the way in," she said. "It's still there." Jo looked at her for a long moment, then smiled the thin, careful smile of someone who had kept a secret for years and found that it still held.
