Cheshire Cat grin with quote
Neo-trad · Other · Mixed · Photo
The tattoo shows the Cheshire Cat's wide black grin with small pointed teeth, above which sit two teal-blue eyes with dark slit pupils and a small red nose. The words "We're all mad here" sit in black script beneath the grin. The linework is bold and dark, with soft shading in the eyes and grin, and the design is centred on the skin.

Tobias Quill had counted the boats in and out of Saltern Cove for thirty-one years, and in all that time the grey cat on the harbour wall had never once been counted. It sat on the bollard by the chandler's, tail wrapped round its feet, and when the fog rolled in off the Channel it simply stopped being there, leaving only its grin hanging over the water like a crescent moon that had lost its patience.

The morning the Mary Ellen failed to come home, Tobias wrote in his ledger that she had cleared the breakwater at six, which was true, and that the wind was steady west, which was also true. He did not write that the glass had dropped overnight, or that his brother Ned had argued for the trip and won. The grin appeared on the wall beside him while he wrote, and he did not look up, because everyone in Saltern knew the cat only grinned at a half-truth.
By noon the fog had thickened, and the harbour women gathered at the slipway with their shawls pulled tight. Tobias went among them with the ledger open, reading out the entries in a steady voice. Someone laughed, high and brittle, and then someone else did, until the whole quay was ringing with it and the cat stretched on its bollard, delighted with the lot of them.
At dusk the Mary Ellen came round the breakwater, low in the water but whole, Ned bawling curses at the tiller. Tobias closed the ledger and found the cat gone from the wall. In its place, scratched in chalk on the stone where it had sat, were words he had not written: We're all mad here. He wiped them off with his sleeve, and then, because the tide was turning and nobody on the quay looked surprised, he left the stone bare for the next clerk to find.
