Colour tattoo of the red and black Chevrolet bowtie logo with script lettering across it, on the inner upper arm.

Chevrolet bowtie logo on upper arm

Lettering · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows the Chevrolet bowtie emblem in red with black outlines, with the word Chevrolet written across it in black script. The red bands are shaded with lighter and darker tones to suggest depth, and cream highlights sit along the edges. The emblem is centred on the arm and fills most of the frame against a plain skin background.

The board at Ashcombe Road has said delayed for forty minutes, and you are on platform two with a cold sausage roll in its paper bag and a key ring still holding your uncle's car key, the red plastic fob cracked across the middle. Nobody else seems bothered. A man in a hi-vis jacket keeps nudging the same cigarette end back and forth across the tiles, and a woman on the bench works through her crossword in biro.

The car has been sitting in the long-stay car park since March. Dennis bought it the year before he retired, cherry red with black trim, and bolted a bowtie badge to the grille, its red bars shaded darker where thirty summers of sun had got at them. He used to say it would outlast the Pennines if you spoke to it kindly. You never once spoke to it at all, and now you are going to have to drive it.

When the tannoy finally gives up a voice, it announces that the 17.42 is cancelled and apologises in the flat tone of people who have stopped meaning it. You walk out past the ticket barrier, past the bike rack and the bin full of wet newspapers, and find the car where you left it, a film of dust on the windscreen and the cream edges of the badge gone grey. The key turns first time, which feels like a small insult.

You take the coast road because it is the long way round. At Hale Lane the level crossing is already down, lamps blinking, and you wait with the engine ticking while a goods train slides past, long and unlit, its wagons rattling like loose change. When the barrier lifts, the badge catches the streetlight, and you drive towards the sea with the window down and the last of the sausage roll on your knee.
