I'd nicked it off the hook in the van on Thursday and forgot to give it back. It kept my fingers from slipping on the wet bolts, so don't you dare ask for it yet.

We finished third, which Sim says is a miracle considering the gearbox we rebuilt at two in the morning on the kitchen table in the motel. Every time the lights went green I thought of you at the rail with your flask, waving the paper flag you'd made from a cereal box, tearing a corner off each time the wind caught it. Ridiculous, I know. The marshal laughed at me when I asked if anyone had seen a girl holding a flag like that.

Afterwards he walked me over to the pit wall and pointed at the scuffed concrete where someone had scratched a heart in the grit with a bit of kerb stone. Tiny, lopsided, with a little chequered line trailing off it like a tail. I'd like to say I didn't know who did it. I'm posting the ribbon back with this letter, and I've left a bit of the bumper sticker on the van where you stuck it. Sim swears he'll scrape it off on Monday. He won't. Love, Rob.
