Chevron stripes along ribs and back
Blackwork · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
The photo shows a shirtless man in two views, front and back, with the face and head cropped out of frame. Two solid black chevron-shaped bands run in parallel, one from the side of the ribs down towards the waistband and one from the shoulder blade down the side of the back. The image is black and white against a plain dark background, with crisp, even edges on the bold linework.

Dad never let anyone else hang the chevron boards. He would stand at the verge with a spirit level tucked under one arm and a pencil behind his ear, then step back and tell the lads to tilt the panel another inch until the two black bars sat true against the white. Thirty-one years of bends on the Ludlow road, and every one had his fingerprints on the bolts.

So when the wedding planner asked for the lane to the barn to be marked, I was the one sent out to the van at half past four. The doors smelt of diesel and wet cardboard. I found a spare board under the spare cones, carried it down to the gate and leant it against the hawthorn, then stood there in my good shoes wondering whether Dad would notice it was missing from the stores.
He noticed. He came down the lane at ten to six in his waistcoat, tie already undone, carrying two glasses of something brown. He looked at the board for a long time, then at me, then at the empty field where the marquee was going up. 'People only need to know which way the road goes,' he said. 'The rest they work out for themselves.' He hung the board on the post at the bend himself, tapped it level with the heel of his hand, and went back up to the reception.
The first car up the lane took the corner too fast, then saw the stripes, eased off and followed them round into the light of the barn. Dad raised his glass to it from the gate, and I heard him say, to nobody in particular, 'There you go.'
