Cinderella pumpkin carriage with blue birds on thigh

Thigh · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows a pumpkin carriage with a pink-lined doorway and heart-shaped keyhole, flanked by two cartoon blue birds and small blue stars. Clean outlines define the carriage, with gradient shading in orange, yellow, turquoise and blue on its body. Green and blue scrolling tendrils and leaves form the base and sweep across the lower half of the composition.

You have been polishing the same gilt on the carriage door since the rain started on Tuesday, because Mr Vosper says the buyers from Margate will come on Saturday and a dull carriage sells for nothing. The paint is orange at the belly and fades to turquoise where the sun used to catch it, and the heart-shaped keyhole has been stuck since the winter the lion died. Nobody has opened that door in eleven years. The old seamstress who sewed the lining always said it was never meant to open.

The show is folding after the seaside season. Six wagons, two clowns who no longer speak to each other, a trick pony with a bad hock. The finches that used to ride the carriage roof have died or flown, so you have painted the blue birds back onto the panels yourself, one wing at a time, using tins the old bird-tamer left behind. On the last night Vosper asks you to drive the carriage once around the field so the children can see it before the auction. You take the reins because there is no one else to take them.

Halfway round, a wheel catches on a tent peg and the little door swings loose. Inside there is no princess, only the pink silk lining and a brass key tied to a ribbon of green. You fit it into the heart and turn. Beyond the door is wet grass and a sky thick with the stars you sewed onto the big top in March, and the coach begins to sag under your hands, the gilt dulling, the ribs curling soft as stalks.

By morning there is only a pumpkin in the grass and two blue birds perched on the nearest wagon, singing as if they have somewhere to be. Vosper sells the wagons by the pound. You keep the pumpkin on the windowsill of your rented room, and on nights when the wind comes off the sea you hear the birds knocking at the glass, wanting in.
