A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
Mind the step, lad, and keep your lamp low. Right, you want the one about the pumpkin coach, the one old Mrs Tully swore on her husband's grave was true. Every night after the last cage went up, when the men were scrubbing coal from their necks in the tin bath, a coach came rolling down Shaft Lane with no horse at all. Its body was orange where the lamplight caught it and blue where the moon did, and green scrolls curled off the wheels like bindweed on a fence.

Two blue birds rode on the roof, singing the wrong tune on purpose so the night-shift men would look up from their pints. Little silver stars dropped out of the sky and settled on the coal dust like frost. Nobody in Harrow Bottom ever saw who sat inside, only a pink glow behind the glass and a red heart painted on the door, and everybody agreed it was none of their business.
Then came the year the colliery shut the top levels, and young Eli Rawle, who owed the company rent and his mother a proper funeral, stood at the crossroads with a shovel on his shoulder. The coach stopped beside him. The door swung open on nothing but warm light. He didn't get in. He told it he had a shift and a sister to feed, and the coach, put out, turned about and rolled back up the hill.
Eli went down the next morning and found a vein of gold running through the wall where the coach had been, and he never once mentioned the carriage again. Mind, he always said the birds came back to sit on the winding gear every spring, and that tells you what sort of man he was. Now get on up those stairs before your mam comes looking.
