Circle and swirl ornament on the foot
Fine line · Other · Colour · Photo
A bare foot shows a tattoo of a large circle with a vertical line through its centre, surrounded by a triangular arrangement of curling scrolls and floral swirls. The linework is thin and dark purple, with the scrollwork tapering into curls at the outer edges. The design sits centrally across the top of the foot against pale skin and a wooden floor.

The clock in the hall of the Trewin house had stopped at twenty to four, and nobody at the wedding seemed willing to be the one to wind it. You stand by the coat rack with a glass of cider going warm, watching your aunt Morwenna pin a silver disc to the bride's sash while she mouths "not yet" at no one in particular.

The disc is a sundial face, the old kind: a circle with a single upright gnomon running through its middle. Your uncle Dennis made it the winter before he died, from a teaspoon and a bicycle bell, and Morwenna has kept it in a biscuit tin with the ferry tickets ever since. The scrollwork around the rim is his too, a triangle of curls filed out with a jeweller's file while the kettle went cold on the Aga.
When the vicar asks for the rings, the bride's hand shakes, the disc slides, and it snags on the lace. You get there before anyone else, and you notice the shadow it throws across the flagstones points straight at the back door, toward the lane where the taxi should have turned in an hour ago. Morwenna nods once, as though the shadow has told her something she already knew.
By the disc it is ten past four when the taxi finally crunches up the gravel, and by then the bride is laughing with both hands over her face. You help her into the back seat and find her other glove under a chair. Nobody asks why the hall clock still says twenty to four, and you don't mention that the shadow was right.
