Circle with flame and calligraphic symbol
Black and grey · Flash
A bold black linework design shows a stylised calligraphic symbol with a looped form, set over a flame shape and enclosed by a thick, slightly uneven ring. The flame and ring are shaded with grey wash, giving depth to the fire, while the symbol remains solid black. The design sits centred on a warm cream-to-brown gradient background with no body part visible.

Fergal, the mate, came down soaked to the skin and asked whether the kettle would ever boil again. She told him the burner ring had cracked and she'd been running it off the spare bottle, which was a lie she had told twice that week. She tipped the last of the oats into the pan and watched the blue flame cough, then steady, circled by its iron ring like something kept on a short leash.
Her grandmother had kept a range in a croft on Shetland and had a saying about fire. It only wants to climb, she used to say, so you give it a ring and it will eat the whole room but keep to the ring. Ada had never believed a word of it. Then the hull groaned, the gas hissed, and she turned the knob down a notch and felt the old heat settle in her hands.
When the porridge was ready she carried four bowls up the ladder. Fergal took his without a word, and the captain, who had never once thanked her, said the oats were fine. Below, the stove ticked as it cooled, the flame folding back into its ring, and the sea went on shouting at the glass.
