The old clockmaker at Hollin Edge had a daughter who could not sleep unless the forest was humming, so each night she walked out past the last gate to listen. Her name was Maud Ferrier and she was nine, though she claimed eleven in the summers. Beyond the gate the beeches stood in a ring round a clearing, and their roots ran out from the trunks in straight grey lines, branching and parting, with a knot of white fungus at every end where a root stopped.

In the wet hollows between the trees lay pools of black pitch that never dried, and the villagers said nothing grew in them. Maud dropped a pebble into the nearest one and heard it ring like a coin on a counter. The sound ran off along the roots toward the village, and the knots at the far ends gave a small answering click.

Her father came looking for her with a lantern on the third night. He found her on her knees, tracing the roots with a stick, and the stick was warm where it touched a knot. 'They are carrying something,' she said. 'Like the wire in your shop, only slower.' He did not believe her until the lantern flickered down every root at once, lighting the ring like a clock face, and each knot blinked in turn.

The village mended its fences that winter by following the roots, and Maud kept a list of every knot that blinked. Her father sold no clocks for a year. When anyone asked what the forest was saying, she told them it was counting, and that it had not yet reached the end of the ring.
