Nobody in Carrow Hollow remembered who had built the well-wheel in the ruined keep of Ashmoor Castle, only that it had turned one way for as long as the village had kept count. Every morning the bucket went down on its rope, every evening it came up full, and the old wheel groaned through the ivy with the same tired sound. Tamsin Wirth, who kept the goats on the castle hill, said the wheel was only tired because nobody ever asked it to stop.

The summer her mother's hands went stiff, Tamsin climbed up to the wheel with a crowbar and a loaf wrapped in cloth. Across the iron axle she found a bar of black oak laid straight through the spokes, the way a thumb holds a page. She asked the wheel why it went round and round, and the wheel said nothing, so she asked the crow who lived in the arch. The crow said the bar was for stopping, and nobody had stopped anything since the lord went over the sea.
Tamsin lifted the bar out and set it down in the nettles. The wheel shuddered, slowed, and then turned back the other way, drawing the rope up through the dark with the bucket swinging like a bell tongue. Water came up clean and cold, the colour of a window at dawn, and it ran down the hill into every cracked trough in the valley.
Her mother drank a cup at the door and said it tasted of nothing she had been told to expect. Tamsin kept the bar in her coat pocket after that, and every spring she turned the wheel once in each direction, so the water never forgot how to go either way.
