Old Tamsin Fenner kept the barge Patience on the Ouse, and in forty years she had never once tied up at the same mooring twice in a row. The river would not let her. It bent back on itself at Hallow Reach and came round so close that a man could throw a stone from one bank to the same bank a mile later, and the bargees said that was why the eel-weirs there were always full.

One autumn her grandson Wil came aboard with a coil of tarred hemp and a bad temper. He had been sent to learn the river and wanted to learn the road instead. Tamsin did not argue. She showed him how to splice a loop with no end to it: lay the rope back on itself, tuck the strands under and over, pull until the crossing sat tight. "Start anywhere," she said, "and you come back to the start, and the rope has never once been cut."

Wil spliced it badly three times. On the fourth he got it right and held it up to the lamp, turning it so the crossing caught the light, and saw that it was a figure of eight lying on its side.

He meant to say something clever about the road, but the barge drifted and the bow knocked gently against the lock gate. Tamsin was already at the tiller, humming, steering them back round the bend towards the same willows they had passed that morning. Wil laughed, coiled the rope over his shoulder, and did not ask where they were going.
