Circular emblem over galaxy wash on forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A large circular emblem is drawn in clean black outline, with interior circles, arcs and straight lines set inside a pale unshaded panel. Behind it, loose pink, blue and purple washes suggest a nebula with small white speckles. The tattoo sits centred on the forearm and is shown in a close, straight-on photograph.

Maud Tarrant had been counting the stars since the spring the well went dry, and by midsummer she had lost three of them. She knew the number because she kept a tally in chalk on the byre door, and the chalk marks went down, not up. Her grandmother said the sky was only a cloth stretched over the world, and that cloths wore thin at the corners where the hands had pulled them.

The wise woman of Caddow Reach lived in a round house with no windows, only a door set into the floor. She gave Maud a disc of pale stone no wider than a cartwheel, cut with rings and crossing lines that never quite met at the edge, and told her to set it in the highest field and wait until the sky went blue and rose at its hem. Maud did as she was told. She carried the stone up through the wet bracken and laid it down, and the lines on it began to move, slow as roots, until each ring sat inside another like the bells of a tower.

When the nebula opened above her, it did not look like a hole. It looked like weather, bruised pink and deep blue, with white seeds scattered through it like salt on a table. Something under the stone clicked. Maud counted seven small points of light that had been waiting for her, drifting back down into their places, and the last one settled exactly over her thumbnail.

She went home before dawn with the disc under her arm. The chalk tally on the byre door was still there, and beside the three lost stars she wrote a fourth mark, this time in a line that went up.
