Circular peony cluster on upper back
Botanical · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A large circular tattoo shows a cluster of peonies with layered petals, smaller blooms and leaves. The work uses dense black linework with stippled dotwork shading to create depth and texture within the petals. The design is centred on the upper back, with the dark camisole straps framing the edges of the composition.

The boats are back before the gulls have finished arguing, and you are already on the quay with a needle full of tarred twine. The Marigold has a hole in her starboard run the size of a dinner plate, and her skipper will not take her out until it is closed. Your fingers know these knots better than they know anything else, which is why your mind can wander to the garden wall at Pell Lane while you work.

Mrs Oakes grows peonies along that wall, great heavy heads that split their sepals in June and scatter petals across the cobbles. Last spring she gave you a cutting wrapped in wet newspaper and told you it would never take in salt air. You planted it anyway in an old lobster pot behind the net loft, where the spray reaches it on every high tide, and you watered it with whatever was left in the kettle.
In October a storm flattened half the moorings along the wall. You found the pot on its side, the stalk snapped, one bloom still clinging by a thread. You carried the flower up to the loft and pressed its petals flat inside a ledger. When you lifted them out they had curled into rings, layer folded on layer, dark at the edges like nets left too long in the rain.
Now the Marigold comes in heavy with her catch and the skipper asks what he owes you. You tell him nothing. You hand him the mended net, coiled tight into a perfect circle, and he turns it over in his hands and laughs, because it looks like a flower, and so, you suppose, does the harbour from the top of the wall.
