Whale tail in circular waves on upper back

Dotwork · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A whale tail rises from stylised ocean waves enclosed in a circular frame, with curling wave crests above. The tail and some wave areas are built from stippled dots, while the water is rendered in fine, flowing lines. The tattoo sits centrally on the upper back and is shown in black and grey ink against pale skin and a dark backdrop.

Dear Tom,

The tide came up the Mersey past midnight tonight, and I stood on the landing stage watching the last ferry lights slide across the black water. I kept thinking about the postcard you sent from Bristol, the one with the whale on it. You wrote that it was the only thing in the shop that looked like the sea does when you're too tired to sleep. I laughed at that, then I didn't, because you were right.

Mr Pryce at the chandlery has been stitching sail canvas under a bare bulb since before the war, and last week he showed me a book of old engravings he won't let anyone take home. The whale tail in one of them had dots pricked into it like spray, and the waves were cut in fine lines that curled over on themselves, all of it held inside a ring as neat as a porthole. He said the sea never looks the same twice, so the trick is to draw it as if you're trying to hold it still for a minute.

I walked home along the dock road with my hands in my coat, counting the lamps on the cranes. Forty-one before the gate, and none of them flickering. Halfway up Hope Street I stopped and looked back, and the river was doing exactly what you'd expect, folding itself over and over under the moon. I thought, if I ever get brave enough to ink something permanent, it will be that ring of water, and I'll make sure the tail is the only thing in it that's moving.

Write when you reach Cape Town. Tell me if the water there is as stubborn as ours.

Love, Nell
