Circular quote tattoo with monogram on upper arm
Lettering · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A close photo of a black ink tattoo on the inner upper arm. A line of text in a circle surrounds a central bold monogram that resembles stylised initials. The lettering is a mix of serif and script forms, and the ring is evenly spaced around the monogram. The skin tone is neutral and the background shows a carpeted floor and a plain wall.

Old Tobias Reeve had cut the words into the hub of the mill wheel himself, the spring before the flood, and the water had not shifted them yet. Young Nell Parr read them each morning while she waited for the sluice to be lifted. We all fall down sometimes. It's okay, I believe. The best get back up.

Her brother Ambrose had fallen from the top rail the week the carter's horse bolted, and since then he would not climb anything higher than a stool. He sat on the bank with his boots off and his face turned to the river.
"Wheelwrights don't climb," Nell said. "They roll things."
She dragged a spare spoke from the shed and set it against the rim, then showed him how the wheel dipped under the water and came up dripping, every time, like a dog that will not stay drowned. Ambrose watched for an hour. Then he went into the shed and came out with the mallet and a pot of tar.
By Lammas the mill turned again. Ambrose never did climb the wheel. He carved one small crooked letter on the spoke nearest the water, and when people asked what it meant he said it was the ordinary part, the bit nobody needs to read twice.
