Circular wreath of wheat-like leaves

Fine line · Colour · Flash

A hand-drawn design of a open circular wreath built from slender, pointed leaves or wheat ears, with the stems curving around to form the ring. The lines are thin and fairly even, with small tapering strokes along each side and no shading. The ink is a purple tone set against a pale, plain background, and the wreath sits centrally with plenty of empty space around it.

The big top had gone grey at the seams by the time the Mercadi family ran out of money for sawdust, so they laid straw instead, and the ring that had once held lions held only two goats and a mule called Sunday. Old Teodor walked the circle each morning with a rake, pulling out the stubble, because his mother had told him a ring must be kept clean or the crowd would smell its failure from the road.

That was the year Ilse came up the track with a sack of seed she had saved from her uncle's farm, which had failed the same way the circus was failing. She asked if she could sow the ring. Teodor said the goats would eat it. She said then the goats would be fed, and that seemed to settle the matter. She raked a narrow band into the dirt under the straw and scattered the seed round it, one slow turn at a time, and the rain came on schedule for once.

The wheat came up thin and pale and grew in a perfect circle, with a gap at the place where Ilse had stopped to wipe her hands. In late summer the village walked out to see something green, and they stood at the edge of the ring without speaking. Teodor cut the stalks with his mother's knife and bound them into a wreath, and he hung it on the centre pole where the lamps used to be.

The goats were fed through the winter. The gap was never filled, because Ilse said a ring should always have one place where a person could step in and begin.
