Come closer, you lot at the back, and mind the hook-a-duck man, he'll have your last penny before the tale's begun. The Wheel of Ilse Varley's Travelling Marvels rolled into Cheltenham in the year of the big frost, and riding in its caravans was a girl called Nell Avery who could walk a rope with a teacup balanced on her head. She had one talent more besides, and that was keeping her word.

Her mother had been a high wire walker too, and when the rope snapped at Gloucester her mother fell and did not get up. Nell set the teacup down in the frosted grass and swore on the wooden pole that she would never again stand on anything that did not hold her weight back. That promise kept her through three winters of cold caravans and empty pockets.

Then one October a stranger came to the fair, a quiet man with ink on his cuffs, who sat by the generator and drew on the back of a ticket stub. He drew a loop lying on its side, the sign for forever, and twisted it through itself so the line never ended. Along the loops he wrote two words in a slanting hand, love on the left and live on the right. Nell asked which one was the promise. He said both, and that the pair of them could not be unpicked.

Nell laughed and told him he was a fool. Then she saw a grey feather caught in the rigging, plucked it free and held it up to the lamp. It had dropped from something that flew high and far, and it swayed as the wind came off the fields. Then let the feather be the proof, she said, and she tied it to the ticket stub. The wind took it over the hoopla stalls and out into the dark fields, slow and light, where nothing could hold it back.
