Three eyebrow stroke design sketches

Black and grey · Flash

The image shows three panels, each containing a single drawn eyebrow with fine, tapering hair strokes that follow the arch of the brow. The strokes vary in density and angle across the panels, with the top panel fuller and the bottom panel sparser, and faint dotted outlines mark the brow shape. The drawings are in black ink on a plain grey-green background, with no body part visible.

Dear Ruth, I have sent you three sheets, though the paper was the only thing in Halvard's hut that didn't smell of paraffin. Look at the top one first. That is the wind on Scarth Gap in February, when it came over the col at sixty miles an hour and combed the tussock flat in one direction, every blade laid down like a sleeper turning over. I drew it with the window open because I was afraid the lines would lift off the page before I got them down.

The middle sheet is October, a softer week, when the gusts came in from the west and lifted the grass in long curved tufts that didn't quite agree with each other. The dotted line along the top is where the snow had lain the week before and no longer did, a ghost of an edge. Halvard says the pass keeps a shape of its weather the way a field keeps the plough, and that a surveyor's job is to draw what is left rather than what he thinks ought to be there.

The bottom sheet is the one I am uneasy about. Sparse, nearly bare, the strokes pulled thin like thread through cloth. That was the morning after the men came up from the valley with the new cairn stones, and I realised I had stopped counting the lines halfway through and simply drew until my hand felt right. I have not told Halvard. He would only ask why I stopped.

Come home at Easter. The pass will look different then, and I want you to tell me which of the three is the true one.
