Enso circle with lotus flower

Japanese · Black and grey · Flash

A bold, open black brushstroke circle, thick at the top right where the stroke starts and tapering to a lighter grey edge on the left. Inside the circle sits a stylised lotus with five pointed petals drawn in fine dark outline with shaded inner petals. The soft grey background is plain and evenly lit, with the subject centred in the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mistress Oda had told him twice already that the stroke must be made in one breath, so when Tomas lifted the brush from the paper for the third time that morning, the ink ran into a grey smudge the colour of wet slate, and he swore under his breath in the language of the dockyards. "Again," she said, not looking up from the lotus she was shading in the corner of the sheet. Rain ticked on the tin roof above the harbour, and outside the gulls argued over the fish boats.

He dipped the brush and tried once more. The circle began thick and dark at the top right, where his wrist had found its weight, swept down past the window, and thinned as it came round the left until the ink was almost dry. It was nearly there. It always was nearly there. He could feel the gap at the top like a splinter under a nail.

Mistress Oda set down her own brush. "You keep trying to close it. The circle is not a door you lock. Let it end where your hand ends." He looked at the breach, then at the five petals she had opened inside the ring, outlined in fine strokes and shaded where the light would fall. She had never once closed a circle in thirty years, and the flower sat in the gap as if it had been planted there.

He lifted the brush, let the stroke go, and for once did not reach for the end.
