City skyline heartbeat line on a wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A single continuous black outline traces a city skyline with a tall spire near the centre, then flattens into a heartbeat trace. A small solid red heart sits at the end of the trace, the only colour in the design. The thin, even linework is shown against pale skin on a wrist, with a mottled green background.

Dear Tomas, the monitor in Bay Four has been drawing the same ragged line since midnight, rising and falling over the blue screen like the roofline you sent me from the bridge. I keep thinking about that photograph. You stood where the river bends and the towers came up out of the fog, and you wrote that the tallest one looked like Dad's needle.

He used to draw it for us on the backs of envelopes, the same jagged skyline every time, the spire in the middle pressed so hard the biro tore the paper. Mum would tease him that he could not draw a house without it looking like an electrocardiogram. He always said a city was just a heart that had got too big to keep still, and then he would add a little red heart at the end, right where the line ran out of paper.

At three the trace went flat for four seconds and every one of us stopped breathing. Then it jumped, a small stubborn peak, and climbed back over the roofs. Mrs Okafor opened her eyes and asked for tea. I wrote the time on the chart and, because nobody was looking, drew a tiny red tick beside it.

Come home at Easter. Bring the photograph and the old envelopes if you still have them. I want to lay them side by side and see whether the needle still points where he said it did.
