City skyline and owl on ankles

Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A black and white photograph of two ankles in canvas trainers. The left ankle carries a solid black silhouette of a city skyline, including a tall tower, and the right ankle has a small owl with wide, round eyes and a feathered head, shaded in grey. The linework is clean and the image is evenly lit against a plain, slightly textured background.

Every evening in late August the old barn owl came down from the cherry trees and sat on the gate at the bottom of Haddow's orchard, looking north past the stacked apple crates towards the town. From the gate you could see the whole thing lying low under the haze: the church spire, the gasworks chimney, and the tall grey tower on the ridge that blinked red at its top like a sleeping ember. Ada Penhallow, who picked windfalls in the next row, said the owl was counting the lights. Nobody believed her, but nobody could say she was wrong.

The trouble was the windfalls. By the first week of September the grass was sweet with rot and the wasps had got into the Discovery drop, and the owl grew so fat and slow that it could no longer manage the gate. It sat in the lower branch of the Bramley instead, swivelling its head at every sound from the lane, and the apples went on falling.

On the last Saturday of the month Ada climbed up with a ladder, a flask of tea and a paper bag of pear drops. She found the owl pressed flat against the bark, eyes huge and furious. "Go on, then," she said, and set a windfall on the rung beside it. The owl took one look at the town and stayed put.

Ada laughed and sat down in the grass to wait. By dusk the red light on the tower had come on, and the owl, for the first time that year, lifted off without a sound and followed it.
