We raised the city at six this morning, before the galley fires were lit. I was on the forward rail with a bread tray under one arm, and the skyline stood up out of the haze with one tall spire in the middle, the very one from the postcard you pinned above the sink. I nearly dropped the tray. Chef Okonedo shouted from the hatch that America had been there a hundred years and the bread would not wait.

Thirty-one days out of Southampton and the engine room has been a second heart under the floor. You feel it through your boots at the range, a steady knock that never misses. Pauline in the laundry says you stop hearing it by the second week, and then one night it stops and you wake with your heart racing, because your body has been counting.

Last night on the late watch I drew the skyline on the back of an order pad, the way Dad used to draw the Mersey ferries for us. I followed the blocks up to the spire, then let the line wander down the far side into a heartbeat trace, and finished it with a small solid heart, like a ticket marked paid. Chef found it on the rack this morning. He tapped the little heart, said nothing clever, and pocketed it for himself.
