City skyline merging into a heartbeat line on a wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A single continuous black outline traces a city skyline with a tall spire near the centre, then flattens into a heartbeat trace on the right. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the ink is solid black. The photograph is black and white and frames the wrist and forearm against a textured grey background.

The bell at Skerrow cracked in the great frost, and for three winters nobody on the island could agree on the hour. The fishwives said it was noon when the gulls went quiet. The schoolmaster swore by his pocket watch, which he had bought in Glasgow and which ran eleven minutes slow every day of its life.

Old Mairi Sinclair, who kept the lamp at the north point, said the island had a better clock than any of them. She meant the spire of St Brendan's, which stood above the harbour roofs like a finger raised for silence. When the wind came in off the water, she said, the spire leaned a hair, and the slate roofs below rose and fell with the tide, and if you lay on the cliff path with your ear to the turf you could hear the whole town breathing.

Tomas Rae, who was nine and did not believe a word of it, took a slate pencil and a strip of tin up to the point one February morning. He pressed the tin against the lamp-house wall and drew what he saw: the roofs going up and down, the spire jabbing high, then the harbour wall where the swell came in and went out. When he was finished he had a line that ran the length of the tin and flattened at the end, where the sea lay quiet under the mist.

The new bell was hung at Whitsun. Mairi found the tin on the lamp-house step, pinned under a stone. Beside the spire Tomas had gone over the same stroke a dozen times, pressing so hard the metal had torn, as though he had been counting the town's heartbeats and had only just stopped.
