City skyline line tattoo on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A single continuous black line forms a city skyline across the forearm, including a ferris wheel on the left, several spired towers, an Eiffel Tower-like structure and two hot air balloons. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the ink is black on pale skin. A metal charm bracelet sits at the wrist edge of the frame, and the background is a grey fabric surface.

The field behind Hollow Farm smelled of cut barley and paraffin, and Uncle Ray was swearing at a buckle that would not sit. Dessa held the sketchbook against her knee and waited. The balloon sagged over the hedge like a sleepy dog, its panels the colour of old custard, and somewhere behind the caravan the kettle had started its long complaint.

She had been drawing cities all summer, though she had never been to one. The postcards from her cousin Lena were pinned above the caravan sink: a wheel of lights above a grey river, a spire as sharp as a pencil tip, a tower of black lace, and the skyline in between, thin as cotton. Nan had told her that a line you lift is a line you are afraid of, so Dessa set her pen at the far left, where the wheel would be, and promised herself she would not stop until the paper ran out.

They rose slowly over the dykes. The wheel came first, a loop of ink that spun out from her wrist and gathered speed. Then the spires, sharp and eager. The basket tilted when Ray leaned out to wave at a heron, and the pen skidded toward the margin. Dessa did not lift it. She let the line drift up into a round shape, tugged it into a second balloon, and carried on across the gap as if she had meant it all along.

Ray peered over her shoulder when they were low again, the barley rushing up to meet them. 'That's Paris in there,' he said, tapping the tower. 'And where's London?' 'Left of the wheel. You can't see it from up here.' He grinned and said the best trips were the ones you drew on the way. When they landed, the kettle had finally boiled over, and her line ran from the first wheel to the last balloon without a single break.
