Eiffel Tower and birds on a wrist
Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small Eiffel Tower is tattooed on the inner wrist, with three birds in flight to its left and right. The tower is drawn in black ink with bold outlines and a dense lattice of fine detail in its lower sections. The image is a close, soft-focus photo against a pale wall, with no colour ink used.

Dear Marjorie,

The gulls have taken over the back yard again, and Mr Pryce has threatened them with a broom, which they regard as a compliment. Your room is as you left it, though I have dusted the sill twice because the postcard you pinned above the washstand has gone soft at the corners. The one of the tower. You said you'd have it copied in ink by a man on the Rue something, and then the boat went and you were gone before I could ask what the man's name was.
Three birds came down on the railings this morning, all facing the same way, as if they were waiting on the tide table. I thought of you counting them off on your fingers the summer you were nine, insisting the middle one was a pigeon in disguise. You always did want the ironwork on everything to be finer than it could be. I told you a drawing can only hold so much iron.
The lodgers are a dreary lot this season. A widower from Leeds who asks for his egg runny and then sends it back. Two girls from a hosiery firm who sing on the stairs. I have kept the attic for you, which is foolish, because you will want somewhere grander now, with a balcony and a view of something other than the harbour wall.
Still, if this reaches you and you find you have the fare, the back bedroom gets the morning light and the gulls will show you the way up. Write soon. Mind the ink, it smudges.
Yours in haste, Edie
