Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A raised hand with fingers spread shows a small, simple camera tattoo on the inner wrist. The camera is drawn in black linework with solid black areas for the body and lens. The background is a soft-focus wall with wooden shelves holding vintage cameras, which keeps attention on the tattoo.

The photographer came up the lane the week the beeches dropped their last leaves, a wooden box on a strap across his chest and a brass key on a string round his neck. He took his pictures for three days. Every plate he developed in the cellar showed the village as it was: the lych gate, the children with their hoops, the miller's cart with a wheel missing. But on the fourth plate the forest had crept close behind the church, and standing among the trunks was a tall grey shape with one hand raised, fingers spread, as if asking him to wait. He carried the plate up to the forge and Mrs Abney only nodded. That was the keeper, she said. It had been waiting a long time for someone to notice it.

Nobody in the village would say what the keeper wanted. The photographer packed his box and walked the road towards the coast, but at the first bend he stopped, opened the shutter in the hedge, counted slowly to thirty and closed it again. At the station he found the plate in his coat pocket was blank except for one small square of silver in the corner, a frame that held nothing but the dark of trees and a hand held up in greeting.

From then on he kept the lens cap on whenever he passed a wood, and he never again asked the trees to hold still.
