Classic muscle car in smoke on a forearm

Realism · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A black classic muscle car is shown from the rear, with its red tail lights, chrome bumper and blank number plate clearly rendered. Smooth shading gives the bodywork and windows depth, and the wheel arches sit partly within billowing grey and brown smoke that wraps around the lower part of the design. The photo shows the tattoo across two near-identical panels against a blurred outdoor background.

Gwen Okafor came off the ward at ten past six with her lanyard still round her neck and the car park grey under the last of the sodium lamps. Her uncle's black muscle car sat at the far end by the bin store, where he had left it three weeks earlier before the ambulance came. Nobody had touched it since. The keys had been in her coat pocket all that time, the fob worn smooth from his thumb.

The engine caught on the third try and coughed a plume of white exhaust that rolled low across the tarmac and wrapped the back wheels in cloud. Through the haze the tail lights glowed red, two round eyes above the chrome bumper. The number plate was blank, as he had always insisted, because he said anyone who needed to know whose car it was could ask him to his face. Behind her a porter wheeled a trolley across the bay, whistling, and didn't look up.

She sat with both hands on the wheel and listened to the engine idle, a sound like a dog breathing in its sleep. Her handover was in nine hours. Her uncle had taught her to drive in this car on the flat roads past the reservoir, with the windows down and the radio loud enough to drown out the arguments at home. She put it in reverse. The smoke slid off the bodywork and drifted between the parked vans like something letting go.

At the barrier she stopped and looked back. The hospital windows were all yellow squares, and somewhere on the fourth floor the night she had left behind was carrying on without her. She pulled out onto the main road and took the long way round by the reservoir, the way he always did, leaving a grey trail that the rain would wash away before dawn.
