The crate had ridden in the back of my flatbed since Barstow, lashed down with three ratchet straps and a tarpaulin that cracked every time a gust got under it. The manifest said statue head, Roman copy, fragile. Sol at the yard in Needles had signed without looking up. 'Don't let it see the sun,' he said, and I took that for a joke until the sun was going down over the Mojave and the crate was still warm from the day.

The blowout came on a long straight past a dry wash, where the road ran so flat you could watch your own dust catch up with you. I pulled onto the gravel, walked round the back, and found the tarp had worked loose at one corner. Through the gap, the stone face looked up at me with its eyes shut. The lips were parted as if it had been about to say something and thought better of it. Dark waves of hair fell in carved rows past the chin, and a folded cloth sat over the brow like a hand had only just let go of it.

I changed the tyre by headlamp and didn't stop looking at it. Sol had said nothing about the eyes, and I wondered who had sat in front of that stone long enough to make the lids look so heavy. When I finished, I pulled the tarp tight and knotted it twice, though I was careful not to cover the face completely. Back in the cab I watched the mirror. The last light slid across the carved cheek and stayed there a moment, the way it does on a sleeping face, before the desert went dark and I drove on.
