Clock and watch tattoos on two hands
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
Two hands are shown in a monochrome photograph, with clock faces, pocket watch parts, gears and ornate oval frames drawn across the fingers, wrists and forearm. The linework is delicate and detailed, with fine hatching and scrollwork around the mechanical motifs. The composition is tightly framed on the hands against a plain grey backdrop, with the tattoos sitting alongside the wristwatch-like rings.

The third clock went quiet somewhere under the hill, and Nell Garside knew it before she saw the dark mouth ahead. Her uncle's cabin smelled of paraffin and oiled brass, the same as it always had, and the narrowboat Patience leaned into the tunnel's cold breath as if someone had asked it to hush.

She counted the ticks the way her uncle had taught her, under her breath, while the lamp swung from its hook. Forty-one clocks lived on the Patience. Some hung in the galley above the stove, some sat on the sill of the forward hatch, and a dozen more were pocket watches wrapped in flannel in a biscuit tin. Every one had a gear missing or a hand bent or a spring worn thin, and every one had been mended at this table by a man who said time was a debt you paid in small coins.
Halfway through the tunnel the hull bumped the wall and the galley shelf rattled. Nell reached for the nearest watch, the silver one with the hairline crack across its face, and felt its winding stem shiver against her palm. It was still ticking, faint and stubborn, the way her uncle's heart had been stubborn until the morning in March he stopped.
She came out into the grey light at the far end with the tin in her lap and the watches all going at once, a mess of tiny arguments. Ahead, the Harrow Cut opened wide and the water shone like hammered tin. She wound the silver watch, closed its lid, and set it to the time the canal would keep from now on.
