Floral henna-style design across a foot
Botanical · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A bare foot, photographed in sepia tone against a soft fabric surface, carries an intricate design of flowers, leaves, swirls and paisley-like motifs. The fine, dense linework covers the top of the foot from the ankle towards the toes, with the toes themselves also decorated. The design appears to be henna-style body art rather than a permanent tattoo, and the image has a shallow focus with soft lighting.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
Nasreen had been crushing the leaves since before the kettle boiled, pounding them in the stone mortar with lemon juice and a spoon of sugar until the green turned the colour of wet moss. Her sister-in-law had brought the cones from Bradford in a shoebox, and the kitchen smelled of cloves and rain.

She drew without sketching first. Her hand moved in loops that never lifted, a bloom opening at the instep, a paisley teardrop curling toward the toes, vines running like handwriting across the bone. The paste went on cool, and she told the story of the carpet seller who had taught her, how every pattern was a sentence and the drying was the pause between them. Nobody spoke. The lamp hummed over the table.
Overnight the paste hardened to a crust, and by morning it had cracked along every line she had drawn, lifting away in fine brown curls onto a sheet of newspaper. What remained was orange and faint at first, then deepened over two days into the rust of a late autumn leaf.
Nasreen kept the spare cone in a biscuit tin with a folded paper tracing of the first design she ever made, a single stem with a bloom at either end. She never told anyone that she drew the last petal on that paper with her eyes closed, so that it would stop short of the ankle, where the pattern was meant to be let go.
