Small heart and anchor finger tattoos
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A close-up of two hands with plum nail polish and several silver rings, including a rose ring, a ring with a dark stone and a skull ring. Two small tattoos sit on the fingers: a simple outlined heart and a small anchor, both in dark blue-black ink. The linework is thin and the shading is minimal, with the background softly blurred by curly hair.

Dear Nell,

The 4.12 to Thornwick came in forty minutes late again, and Mr Pryce on the platform bench swore it was the sea's fault, the way the salt gets into the points. I told him the sea has never once kept a timetable, and he laughed so hard he dropped his pipe. You'd have liked him. He still calls you the girl who drew a heart on the ticket window with a wet thumb.
The old signal box is shut now, but I keep its key on the nail by the kettle. Yesterday I found the logbook where you left it, the last page still in your slanting hand: a small anchor drawn in blue biro, a heart beside it, and under them, just wait for the boat. I didn't understand until I walked down to the quay in the evening and saw the Margaret Ann tied up with her sails furled, and realised you'd been pricing passages on the back of the timetable for a month.
I haven't been to the quay since. I'll go tomorrow, because the tide is high at six and the light off the water does something to the paint on the waiting room that I want you to see. Bring your own ticket this time.
Yours, as ever, Tom
