Realism · Thigh · Colour · Photo

A clone trooper in blue and white armour holds a blaster rifle in front of a large Galactic Empire emblem filled with a glowing orange and purple nebula and scattered stars. Shading gives the armour a realistic metallic finish, with bold black outlines around the figure and emblem. Blue, orange and yellow ink dominate the piece, with a line of blue lettering running down the right side.

Mae had been scraping salt off the same pauldron since the morning tide came in, and the grey plate still wouldn't give up its colour. Blue, under the grime, and a white gone the shade of old candle wax. Her uncle's shop smelled of brine and machine oil, and the armour sat on the bench like a man waiting to be called into a meeting he had forgotten.

Tobiah Renn, the harbourmaster, had hauled it off the sandbar after the spring storms shifted an old supply hulk onto its side. He said the crew had all been lost in some other war, long before anyone in Gullhaven was born, and that the locker had been sealed ever since. Mae found a stamped code under the left arm, a row of letters and numbers that matched nothing in her uncle's ledgers, and a small emblem scratched inside the helmet: a ring of spokes, like a cog or a sun, with stars crowded behind it.

She worked the helmet free that night with a brass brush and a paraffin lamp. When the last crust of rust gave way, the inside of the visor caught the light and the scratched ring seemed to open, its spokes going orange, then violet, as if the dark behind them had been painted by somebody who had seen a great deal of sky. She had expected a dead thing. Instead it looked like a window.

In the morning she carried the helmet down to the quay and set it on the wall beside Renn's office. She did not tell him what she had seen. She only raised the visor, so the first sun touched the stars inside, and walked back up the hill before the gulls had finished arguing over the fish scraps.
