Scuba diver tattoo on a leg
Other · Mixed · Photo
A scuba diver in a dark silhouette, wearing a tank, mask and fins, is shown in a diagonal pose on the skin. The figure has greyscale shading with small yellow accents on the tank and straps, and a thin blue-black outline of a scalloped design sits at the left edge. A partly visible traditional-style colour tattoo appears in the bottom right corner.

Dear Tomasz,

The rain has been coming sideways across the car park since six, and the tarpaulin over my stall at Hollin Street market has given up holding anything. I've moved the regulators into the cardboard box under the table and sat on the fins to keep them dry. Nobody comes out in this weather except the man who wants a second-hand wetsuit for his nephew, and he hasn't come back.
You'll remember the regulator I bought off the Aberdeen trawler man, the one with the cracked gauge. I tried to sell it this morning to a lad who wanted it for a fish tank. I told him it was a diving piece, not a toy, and he laughed at me the way you used to laugh when I talked about the trench off Portland. I nailed a strip of tin above the stall years ago with a black diver painted on it, mask up, fins kicking, straps picked out in yellow. The lad said it looked like a burnt match.
I thought about that diver all afternoon. He never looks back at the surface, not once. Still, I like to think he's the one who found the wreck the rest of us kept missing.
I'm closing up at four whatever the weather does. Come down on Sunday if the ferry runs. I'll keep the good tank for you, the one with the yellow straps you always wanted to scrub clean.
Yours in the wet, Nell
