Closed eyes tattoo on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Two small closed eyes with curved lashes sit side by side on the forearm. The thin, uniform linework is in a single dark ink with no shading. The cream shirt sleeve forms a plain background, and the tattoo is centred in the frame.

Tuesday, the fourth of November. Snow on Harrow Gap since noon and the telegraph wire singing like a kettle. Mam's letter came up with the post mule, sealed twice, which she only does when she is cross with me. She wants me down in the valley for the winter. I have written back that the pass needs someone to count the lamps, and that in eleven winters I have never once failed to count them.

The old rule is written on the first page of the hut book, in Grandfather's cramped hand: when the wind comes off the north face, shut your eyes and keep them shut until it drops. The drifts move and the ridge goes white, and a man who watches them long enough will begin to walk toward whatever voice is calling from the snow. I laughed the first time I read it. Tonight I did it anyway, sat on the bench with my back to the stove and my lids down, counting the lamps by the draught on my neck.

Somewhere past midnight the wind dropped. I opened my eyes to the grey light and saw the lamp line running clean over the saddle, four lamps, all burning, and a figure in a long coat standing at the top of the path with a dog at his heel. I did not call out. I kept the rest of me still, as Grandfather taught. The figure lifted one hand, turned, and walked down the far side as though the snow had always been firm there.

In the morning there were two sets of prints in the drift outside, one going up and one coming down, and the dog's tracks stopped at the cairn. I am writing this so that whoever keeps the hut after me knows the rule is sound. Four lamps lit. Mam will be pleased to hear I did not need to come down.
