Wavy line and bird on an ankle
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A single continuous black line rises diagonally across the skin, dipping into a wave, with a small bird in flight above it. The linework is thin and even with no shading, and the design sits on pale skin against a red tartan background. The composition is minimal, with the tattoo occupying a small area of the frame.

No, don't look at the water yet, you'll lose the thread. Sit close to the peat where the wind can't find you. Now. On the island of Sgeir Bheag there was a woman called Morag Dunn who whitewashed her gable every spring, and every spring she drew the same stroke on it with a burnt stick before the lime dried. She never lifted her hand. Start at the peat stack, rise over the rig, dip where the tide comes in, and run on out to the skerry without a break.

The gull who watched her from the ridge was called Ceit, and she had a restless streak the other gulls found tiresome. She wanted to know where the stroke ended. Morag said it ended at the sea, which was no answer at all, so one morning in May Ceit lifted off the chimney and followed the line out over the water, wingtips near the surf, until the land was a thread behind her and the wave in the drawing was real beneath her, grey and rising.
Out there the sea cared nothing for lines. A squall came up from nowhere over the Minch, the wind turned her twice, and she came down on a creel buoy soaked to the bone. She could not see the island. She could see only water in every direction, and she began to think the stroke on the wall had lied to her, that a line was just a thing a person says to feel safe.
Then she heard it, the faint knock of Morag's hammer on the gable nails, and she knew which way home lay. She flew it again, low, keeping one eye on the place where the line dipped into the tide, and she was on the wall before the lime had set. Morag did not look up. She simply lifted her burnt stick and drew one small bird above the line, just where Ceit had been.
