Fine line black tattoo of a clothes hanger above the script word fashion on the inner wrist, with a hand and red nails below.

Clothes hanger and fashion script on a wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows a thin outline of a clothes hanger with a looped hook, with the word fashion written in cursive script beneath it. The linework is delicate and even, and the ink appears dark grey or brownish with no shading. The design sits centrally on the wrist, against a soft, warm-toned photo of a floral patterned fabric with a hand and painted red nails at the bottom edge.

The function room at the Crown smelled of carpet shampoo and warm sausage rolls, and Denise Harkness was still wearing the blouse she'd made in Home Economics in 1986, the one with the bow Mr Pryce said would never sit straight. It sat straight now. She saw me looking and tugged the bow like a woman who knew exactly what it had cost her.

At fifteen we all rode the bus to Chapel Street market on Saturdays. Denise bought cardigans for a pound apiece and unpicked them on her bedroom floor while her mum watched Coronation Street. She kept the wire hangers from the dry cleaner's, bent them into little loops, and hung her finished things from the curtain rail so the room looked like a shop with the lights off. On the back of her geography jotter she'd written FASHION in looping capitals and underlined it twice. When we laughed, she said she'd be laughing back from a window in London one day.

She never went to London. She has a shop with a loose step on Chapel Street and a sign she painted herself, and she told me over the trifle that the trick was the hanger, not the address. Hang a thing up properly, she said, and it's already a collection. Then she pressed a bent wire into my hand, the loop worn smooth and bright from years of use. I didn't have the heart to tell her it was the only gift I'd been handed all night that didn't come with a name badge.
