A photograph of a small tattoo on a wrist, showing a clothes hanger outline with the word fashion written in cursive script beneath its hook. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the ink is solid black. The wrist is held against a patterned floral fabric background, with a hand and red painted nails visible at the bottom of the frame.

The Queen of Castellmoor sent for you before the bells, which is how you knew the hem of the midnight-blue gown had given way again. Three apprentices had been summoned to the Rose Tower this winter. Two came back down the back stairs with their hair singed by the candles and their wages doubled. You went up with your own wooden hanger over one arm, the only one in the palace with a fine iron hook bent into a loop, because your grandmother said a good gown deserves a hanger that is not ashamed of itself.

The gown lay across the window seat like a sleeping river. You lifted it by the shoulders, the way you had been taught, and felt the weight settle where the stitches were weakest. The queen watched from the doorway and asked what you meant to do. You said nothing. You hung the gown from the hook and let the morning light come through the silk, showing the mended seam, the dropped thread, and the places where the dye had run and been coaxed back.

'That word on your hanger,' she said. 'Fashion. Is it a spell?'

'It's what the thing does,' you said. 'It holds what is worth holding until someone else needs it.' She laughed, short and surprised, and ordered the gown returned to the wardrobe on that hanger alone. By Lent every lady in the Rose Tower carried one, and the tailors were scratching the word into their own crossbars, badly, with whatever knife was nearest.
