Clouds, rainbow and lightning on an upper arm

Upper arm · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo covers the upper arm and shows outlined cartoon clouds with a few yellow and orange lightning bolts, a curved rainbow in red, orange, yellow and blue, dripping red and orange raindrops and small scattered orange stars. The clouds and bolts are drawn with dark grey outlines of even weight, with flat fills in bright colours. The two photographs show the same arm from the front and side, with the design spread across the outer arm and the back of the upper arm.

The rain had been falling on the wrong side of the valley for three weeks, so Mrs Adeyemi-Probert's cloud came down the hill to see what the trouble was. It was a small cloud with a grey hem and a temper, and it hung over the allotment fence like a damp grey dog. Nobody had asked it to come. The beans were drowning in their own shadow and the tomato canes had gone soft as liquorice.

The boy from the bungalow had been sent to fetch the watering can and came back with a bolt of yellow lightning instead, because he had been practising in the shed with a torch and a roll of foil. He held it up to the cloud the way you would show a teacher your homework. The cloud sulked. It spat one orange drop onto his trainer, then another, then a whole fistful, and the drops fell in a neat red line across the path like someone had pricked a finger over the lettuces.

By teatime the cloud had made up its mind. It let the rain stop, pulled its hem up over the church spire, and drifted off towards the reservoir with a sort of shrug. Behind it, something bent across the sky in red, orange, yellow and blue, the way a bent wire holds a shape after the pliers let go.

Mrs Adeyemi-Probert said the beans would be fine now. The boy said the rainbow was his idea. Neither of them mentioned that the little orange stars that had come out over the shed were still there the next morning, sitting in the wet grass, waiting to be counted.
