Coat hanger outline tattoo on the neck
Fine line · Neck · Black and grey · Photo
A black and white photograph of the back of a person's neck and upper shoulders, with their head turned away from the camera and their hair gathered by a hand. A small, thin black outline of a coat hanger sits on the skin at the nape of the neck. The soft focus and muted tones keep attention on the single delicate line and the contrast with the skin.

The wire came off the spool in a long grey curl, and Dolly Pell held it taut between her teeth while she bent the hook with her thumbs. Everyone on Cobden Street knew her hangers. She made them for the dry cleaner's at the bottom of the hill, for the tailor's over the bakery, and for anyone who owned a coat too good to be dropped on a chair.

Her nephew Ray came in one Thursday with a suit jacket over his arm, the lapels still sharp from the press. He wanted a hanger that wouldn't leave a bump in the shoulders. 'Make it narrow,' he said. 'Make it so you can hardly see it.' She didn't ask who the suit was for. She had watched enough men buy suits for weddings and funerals to know the difference, so she bent the wire fine as a thread, one clean loop and a short run of straight to the hook.
When the funeral was done, the suit came back in a carrier bag with the hanger still inside. Ray put it on her counter and said he didn't want it, and she should keep it for someone who would. Dolly turned it over. The metal had gone soft and pale where a thumb had rested on it for years. She hung it on the hook by the window, where the light from the street lamp fell across it at night.
Months later a girl came in asking for a hanger for a dress she was taking on the train to Leeds. Dolly reached for the wire without thinking, then stopped, and took the old one down instead. 'This one's been waiting,' she said. The girl laughed, said it was a bit fancy for a dress, and took it anyway.
