The boot was sitting upright in the bed of orange nasturtiums when I came out with my tea, its laces tied in a red ribbon bow as neat as a parcel. Ruth's mug was on the wall beside it, grey enamel with a diamond painted on the side, and the coffee in it had gone the colour of wet slate. In forty years of gardening next to her, I had never once seen her go out without her boots.

I stood there with my own flask, feeling foolish, the way you do when you have been left something you don't understand. The purple asters had been cut back hard, every stem, and a row of pegs marked out the bed where the potatoes ought to go. Ruth never cut anything without telling me, and she never planted without the frost dates pinned to the shed door. The shed door was open. Inside, the calendar hung on its nail with Thursday circled twice in biro.

Under the calendar was a note weighted down with a flint: "Gone to Morecambe with the bus club. Boots in the bed so you'll know I meant it. Fine, I promise. Water the tomatoes, you old fusspot."

I laughed out loud, alone in the drizzle, and drank her cold coffee from the mug anyway. It tasted of sugar and iron and of Thursday. Then I went to find the watering can, and left the boot exactly where she had put it, because a promise is a promise, and so is a pair of boots left out in the rain.
