Person in hat with arm tattoos by a window

Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A person wearing a wide-brimmed hat, a sleeveless white top and white jeans leans against a window frame with one hand raised and the other on the hip. The face is turned down and largely hidden by the hat and hair. Tattoos are visible on the upper arm and forearm, appearing as dark shading in a monochrome photograph, but their individual designs cannot be made out.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dorothy Quayle had replaced the sash cord in the back bedroom three times since March, and each time the window sank again by Thursday. Her son Kieran said it was the frame, that the wood had gone soft at the sill and she should let him sand it back. She said the house had settled and a house was allowed its habits.

On the Saturday she took the sash out herself. Behind the weights, in the dry channel where the cord ran, she found a rolled tin of pear drops, a tram ticket from 1961 and a folded card with a pencilled map of the weir and the towpath beyond it. A cross sat near the lock gates, and beneath it were the words meet when the lamps come on. The handwriting was her mother's.

She sat on the floor with the card on her knee until the light went orange over the yard. Then she rang Kieran, not to ask him to sand anything, but to ask whether he still had the van and whether he would drive her to the weir before the rain.

The window stayed up all night for the first time since March. In the morning the lamps were still lit along the towpath, and the cross on the map turned out to be a bench with a brass plate. She could not read the plate until she wiped the frost from it with her sleeve.
