Small bird tattoo on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A person sits holding a light grey and white cat that rests across their knees, which are covered by cream lace-knit tights. A small black bird tattoo with delicate linework is visible on the outer forearm of the arm on the right of the frame. The soft, warm palette and shallow focus keep the cat and the knitted texture as the main subjects, with the tattoo as a small detail.

The galley stove has gone out again, and Tallow the cat has claimed the warm end of the bench where the flour sack sits. You rake the ash from the firebox and swear at it under your breath, because Mr Pim will be down for his tea within the hour and the mutton will not cook itself on a sulky grate. Tallow watches you with the calm of something that has survived three winters on the Grimsby run.

The swift came aboard off Spurn Head, half dead and folded into the rigging like a dropped glove. You fed it crumbs of ship's biscuit from your palm until it stopped shivering, and the skipper said birds that land on a trawler mean to stay until the weather turns. It did not stay. By the next tide it had gone east, and you told yourself that was that. You had the little bird inked above your wrist the week you got your ticket ashore, a single line for the wing and a forked tail, so you would not forget how a thing can rest on you for a night and still be free.
Pim came down at six with his boots still wet from the deck and found you on your knees before the stove, coaxing a flame out of damp coal. He said nothing about the cold, only set his cup on the table. When you looked up, the hatch was open to the grey morning, and there on the rail sat the swift, feathers ruffled, turning its head as if counting the crew.
You tipped the last of the biscuit onto the sill and went back to the mutton.
