Colour mandala flower tattoo with purple and pink petals and black outlines, placed on the calf below the knee.

Mandala flower tattoo on a calf

Neo-trad · Calf · Mixed · Photo

A symmetrical mandala-style flower sits at the centre of the image, with layered pink and purple petals, a dark centre ringed with small yellow and blue-grey dots, and pointed leaf shapes around the outer edge. Bold black outlines and dark negative areas define the design, with soft purple and pink shading within the petals. The tattoo is centred on the back of a lower leg against a white textured background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mind the third step, it gives under a boot, and keep both hands on the rail going up, because the lamp room is a long climb for a man with a bad hip, and I have the hip to prove it. Now. You want to hear about the lens. Everybody wants to hear about the lens.

The lens came from a foundry in Leeds in a crate that took four men and a carthorse to haul up from the quay at Skerrow. Brass rings nested inside rings, prisms cut like the petals of a flower that only opens after dark, and at the very centre a dark core where the flame sits, small as a seed. When the first keeper, Dunstan Pell, lit it, he swore the beam came out in rows of petals, and that a ship at sea would see a rose opening on the water. The fishermen had no word for that, so they borrowed one off a steamer's cook, a strange word that meant something about a circle, and it stuck.

Dunstan's daughter Ada carried his tea up every night and counted the brass studs around the centre, seven yellow and nine grey, the way other girls counted sheep. One February the sea-salt clouded the glass until the light went soft and useless. She sat up with vinegar and a rag and her own sleeve, rubbing one petal at a time until her knuckles bled, and when the beam caught again the Greta Mary came in on it, every man aboard alive.

I have polished that centre every night since, and I have never once been asked to. So when you go down, mind the third step.
