Nobody had told Pemberton's Sweets that the pumpkin in the window was sulking. Mrs Okafor found out at half past six on the thirty-first, when she came in to restock the penny chews and saw the orange lantern had turned its face to the wall. "Oi, you," she said, tapping the glass. The pumpkin did not turn back.

Her grandson Tomasz, nine and very serious, sat on the counter swinging his legs. "It's because it's the only one not going out," he said. "The waffle cone's got a bike. The lollipop's going to the fair. Everyone's going somewhere except the pumpkin."

So they made a plan. They shut the shop early, unhooked the lollipop sign from the wall, and tied a strip of sugar paper to the cone as a flag. Tomasz filled a paper bag with the pink cherry hearts from the jar and scattered them along the pavement like a trail. The stars came out over the bus shelter one by one, and the pink and purple streaks swirled round the lamppost as if the whole street had caught the mood.

At the corner the pumpkin was waiting, its face lit now and grinning. It had turned round the moment they locked the door, and Mrs Okafor saw it had only been waiting for someone to ask it along. "Right," she said. "Where are we going?" Tomasz held out the bag. "Everywhere," he said, and the pumpkin grinned wider.
