Comb and lily on a forearm
Traditional · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A green comb with dark teeth sits across the right of the design, with a pink lily in the upper left and teal leaves fanning out behind the flower. Bold, even outlines in gold or yellow frame each shape, and the fills are flat with little visible shading. The tattoo is shown close up on skin against a pale green background.

Dear Tom,

The lily came up through the cracks behind the petrol station at Carrow Flats the week you left, which I took as a sign, though Mum says it was just the rain on a bad summer. I've been keeping the comb you forgot on the sink in the back of the salon. Green handle, teeth worn pale at one end, the kind Grandad Ray swore by for his moustache and nothing else. I haven't cut a single fringe since Tuesday without wanting to ask you about it.
The road out of town runs straight for forty miles with nothing on it but the odd lorry and a sign for a motel that shut in 1994. Last Thursday a man stopped in for diesel and a coffee and asked whether we did shaves. I said we did, and then he asked whether the desert ever gets to you, and I said only when the wind changes. He laughed and left a ten pound note under the cup, which out here is a fortune. I think he was lonely. Everyone out here is, a bit.
Anyway, I'm writing because the wind changed this morning and I found a second lily under the water tank, pressed flat and yellowing at the edges, with a cheap plastic comb wedged through its stem. Someone else's, I suppose, or someone who wanted to leave a mark. I've put it in the drawer with yours. Come home for the autumn, or at least write back and tell me the teeth on that comb were always that crooked.
Love, Jess
