Teal and black mandala on shoulder

Dotwork · Shoulder · Mixed · Photo

A large circular mandala covers the shoulder, with a central teal rosette surrounded by concentric rings, petal shapes and small dots. Fine black outlines are filled with stippled dotwork shading in the petals and outer scallops. Teal accents appear within the inner rings and along the edge, while the skin tone shows through the lighter areas.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The compass had been Brother Anselm's before it was mine, and its left leg still wobbled where the pin had worked loose in the damp of the scriptorium. I tightened it with my thumbnail while the bell for Sext rang over the orchard, then pricked the first point in the vellum and swung the circle wide.

Anselm had taught me the rule of the rosette: start at the centre and never hurry the rings. Every petal answers the one before it, he said, and every dot is a breath you are allowed to take. We worked through the winter on the great wheel for the chapter house, a sun of blue ink and lapis that Abbot Hugh wanted above the stair. Anselm stippled the scallops with a goose quill cut to a fine nib, tapping and tapping, until the outer edge looked like frost on a window.

Anselm died in February with the wheel half done, his hand still resting on the rule. I finished the inner ring alone, teal wash thinned with rainwater, and found the outer petals came out wrong unless I counted my taps the way he had counted his.

On the last morning I held the vellum against the window and the light came through every guide mark at once, a small constellation of pinholes where he had set his points. I did not fill them in. I left them showing, the way he would have, and went down to tell the abbot the wheel was done.
