The photograph shows a black script tattoo reading "come as you are" running along the inner upper arm, with the arm raised and the skin partly shaded by a grey sleeve. The lettering uses a thin, even, flowing linework with a joined cursive hand. The image is a plain, lightly toned close crop with the tattoo as the clear focus.

Mags Dunnet chalked the words above the galley hatch the winter her husband's boat went down off the Ness, and nobody on the harbour asked her why. The men who came in off the boats read them and took their caps off before they ate. She kept the stove lit from four in the morning, and the pot never came off the hob for anyone who was cold.

In March a lad came down the quay in a borrowed coat, too thin for the wind, carrying a sea bag with little in it. He stood at the foot of the gangway and would not come up. He had been turned away from two other boats that week, he said, because he had no papers and no mate to vouch for him. Mags read his face the way she read the sky, then told him the words above the hatch were not a question.

He ate two bowls of oatmeal with salt and a heel of bread, and fell asleep against the warm side of the stove with his boots still on. In the morning the skipper found the chalk rubbed away at one end, and beneath the old words someone had written a name in careful capitals. Mags looked at it for a long time and let it stay.

By summer there were three names under the words, then seven, and the slate had to be scrubbed and started again every autumn. Mags never did learn who had first taught the lad to write so neatly. She only knew the stove stayed lit and the hatch was never shut before the last boat was in.
