A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dora had been waiting at Hatchford Lock since before the rain, her windlass hooked on her belt and the gates groaning as the water sank away beneath her narrowboat. Across the chamber, the other boat sat low and patient, its brass chimney polished to a sulk. Its owner, Tobias Vane, who had once sold her a dented kettle, had not spoken to her in three summers.

The lock filled slowly. Water boiled up through the paddles and the boats rose together, inch by inch, until the gates could be swung open. Dora walked the towpath to the bottom gate and pushed. Tobias came up the far side with a coil of rope over his shoulder and his hat pulled low, and for a moment neither of them said anything at all.

"You've let the weed grow on your side," he said eventually.

"You've let your temper grow on yours."

Tobias laughed, which she had not expected, and the sound went up off the stone walls and came back doubled. He tossed her the mooring line and she caught it without looking, the way she had when they were children on the same cut, racing their fathers' boats to the next bridge.

Later, when the boats lay side by side under the willows, he brought two cups up onto the roof and poured tea from a dented pot. On the lock keeper's hut behind them, a painted board had faded until only the strokes of COME TOGETHER remained, the paint flaking from the letters like bark from a birch. Dora traced the curl of the final word with her eyes until the kettle sang.
